“To regard beauty as a luxury adornment or a social signifier was to miss the true potential of the experience.”, art has so much meaning. Armstrong believes that beauty has far more meaning than just being a “luxury adornment”, beauty is something in which gives pleasure and happiness to people. When you look at beauty as some sacred thing I think you are taking away the real emotion you can experience when seeing or feeling beauty. It is used to express ones self and not just something for the high social classes. I agree completely with Armstrong, beauty is anything that I think stops you in your tracks and catches your aye. Beauty is something that you can appreciate, from a picture, a beautiful song, or just being full of euphoria. I believe that beauty is all based off of someone’s opinion, everyone sees beauty in their own way “The only popular thought about beauty today, the one that has the widest currency in the world, is the idea that beauty lies in the eye of the beholder“. I feel as if society views art a little different than individuals, there is this preconceived idea that beauty needs to the most popular thing at that time such as a style that’s popular or a new hit song. But once again I think beauty lies in the eyes of the beholder as Armstrong states, it is not as easy to generalize things into the category of beauty.

  1. Great! What do you think it is about beauty that allows for social norms to so easily dictate its definition?
