“The transformative power of classical music”

“The transformative power of classical music” Ted Talk by Benjamin Zander is all about how important music is in the world. He emphasizes that people connect with music and it touches everyone in a different way. But when you connect with a certain piece of music that is speaks to the soul. Zander spoke about how he had an epiphany in which it struck him that he has the capability to empower others, the ability to spark something within others to create something so great and beautiful.

In “Is Art a Waste of Time?” by  Rhys Southan he fights against the ideas of the effective altruists on art. They believe that is useless unless used for marketing their own beliefs. While Southan talks about a world without art would not be a world at all. Southan expresses his love of art and the idea of how powerful it can be when used correctly. He battles these thoughts that make him second guess his passion but overcomes them with his knowledge that it is important.

Both Zander and Southan has a positive view on the impact art has on the world and its people. Art changes lives and peoples’ points of view on certain topics. It something that people can relate to and find some kind of meaning in it. Zander thinks that art can motivate people to be powerful but the EA’s say the opposite. The conflicting opinions on whether or not art can change lives. I agree with Zander on that art is a very meaningful and powerful thing. It can change lives and it does, sometimes in the lowest of times things such as music can lift peoples’ spirits.

  1. Eric,
I’m glad to see that you chose to work with Zander! I think you did a great job articulating what each text has to say. I do want to challenge you on Southan’s view, however. Consider revisiting the text to look for moments when Southan says something directly about art–pay attention to what he has to say about art’s meaning BEFORE he meets the EAs versus AFTER he meets the EAs.

I enjoyed reading how you wrote about Zander. You chose to use the word “power” so often. This quote here: “Zander thinks that art can motivate people to be powerful…” I’d love it if you continued to follow that thread. I’d love to see where it leads.
